Electricity powered by offshore wind turbines in the UK has been sold for cheaper than energy from new nuclear power for the first time, in a subsidy auction on Monday.
The auction saw electricity from offshore wind sold for delivery in 2022 to 2023 for as low as £57.50 per megawatt hour. This is significantly lower than the £92.50/MWh guaranteed to Hinkley Point C, the only thermal power plant that has been awarded subsidies through this auction process.
