Offshore wind is cheaper than nuclear power for the first time

Electricity powered by offshore wind turbines in the UK has been sold for cheaper than energy from new nuclear power for the first time, in a subsidy auction on Monday.

The auction saw electricity from offshore wind sold for delivery in 2022 to 2023 for as low as £57.50 per megawatt hour. This is significantly lower than the £92.50/MWh guaranteed to Hinkley Point C, the only thermal power plant that has been awarded subsidies through this auction process.
