When is a turtle not a turtle? When it’s a rifle. It sounds like a bad riddle but this is a genuine conundrum for an artificial intelligence trained to identity objects. By subtly tweaking the pattern on the shell of a model turtle researchers were able to trick a neural network into misidentifying the object as a rifle. The results raise concerns about the accuracy of face recognition systems and the safety of driverless cars, for example.
